While it may not seem real estate related, understanding the type of baby boomer you are can help determine the exact location and type of residence you should consider to both improve your quality of life and achieve your dream lifestyle. Here BEYOND Realty shares six types of baby boomers provided by the SRES® council and thoughts on how the type of boomer you are relates to choosing the ideal residence.
1. THE GRAND BOOMER

Your main priority is family. Family comes first as you teach the next generation and keep family traditions alive. You enjoy family get-togethers and want to dedicate much of your free time to babysitting or shuttle your grandchildren to various activities.
When choosing a residence, consider proximity to your children, space to host family gatherings, and/or bedrooms to accommodate sleepovers with your grandchildren.
2. THE ADVENTURE BOOMER

Your main priority is me time. Adventures await as you finally have the free time to explore and live a healthy and active lifestyle. You enjoy travel, recreation, and exploring new hobbies.
When choosing a residence, consider low-maintenance properties, or renting so you can hit the road in an RV.
3. THE ENTREPRENEURIAL BOOMER

Your main priority is sharing your gifts and talents. Success in working your creative mind and meeting your goals continues on your own terms. You enjoy paying it forward, growing a new business out of an innovative idea or hobby, and having a philanthropic spirit.
When choosing a residence, consider space for a home office, workshop, large garage, or studio to accommodate your small business. Or perhaps a smaller low-maintenance home and rent space for your business off-site.
4. THE TRADITIONAL BOOMER

Your main priority is remaining independent. Age in place as your home remains a part of your identity. You are a traditionalist who loves your home and the wonderful memories it holds. If you do make the decision to downsize, to a similar but smaller home, you’d prefer to stay in a single-family residence in a community with people of similar mindsets.
When choosing a residence, consider all of the latest options for the ‘right size’ such as the proposed Cottage Commons “pocket neighborhood” project under review with the City of Brookfield before you decide to stay in your current home. If you do decide to stay, consider ways such as hiring routine maintenance providers to help maintain your current home as your physical abilities decline.
5. THE UPTOWN BOOMER

Your main priority is culture and entertainment. Surround yourself with amenities when you move ‘downtown’. You enjoy a carefree and maintenance-free lifestyle filled with meeting up with friends, entertainment, access to the arts, close shopping, and the ability to eat out at different restaurants several times a week.
When choosing a residence, consider the lifestyle more than the property. ’Downtown’ doesn’t necessarily have to be in a big city. Many smaller communities have some of the same benefits as big cities, such as those in Waukesha County Lake Country, where everything you seek is probably within walking distance.
6. THE SANDWICH BOOMER

Your main priority is family ties. Support for each other offers peace of mind for your entire family unit as multi generations live and grow together in the same household. You have strong traditional family values, feel honored to take care of aging parents, or feel blessed to be able to support adult children during these uncertain times.
When choosing a residence, consider a layout that allows you to live together and stay connected but also provides the ability to have some private space. You may want to consider homes with an “in-law” suite or an accessory dwelling unit (ADU).
